Spaces URL Changes

There have been a lot of comments on The Spacecraft about the upcoming Spaces URL changes. Here is some insight into why this is happening.

Spaces has grown very quickly into one of the Web’s mega services. So quickly in fact that we just passed the 100MM user mark and have had to do some architectural changes to ensure that Spaces can be deployed in multiple data centers. We needed to deliver a system that allows for Spaces to be distributed across multiple data centers without requiring a URL that included the data center name. How unkewl would that be? Can you imagine telling your friends and family that the URL to your space was http://cluster25.dc1.spaces.msn.com/gphipps?

So we have developed a DNS (Domain Name System) based solution that allows us to redirect requests to the right data center and allows us to keep a better looking URL. Moving the Space name into the domain name is a requirement of that.

We also heard the pain we created for our users with the URL change made in our release in January and to help mitigate this upcoming name change we have worked with the following companies to proactively address the associated ranking issues:

  • Technorati
  • Weblogs
  • Feedster
  • PubSub.com
  • Bloglines
  • Ask.com

In addition, we have dialogs with the following search engine companies

  • Live Search
  • Yahoo
  • Google

I can’t promise that this will be a completely seamless transition; but rest assured we are working hard to make this as seamless as possible.

Doing the rearchitecture work and making the move to Live Spaces was not possible for a number of technical reasons. This is why we can’t move straight to the spaces.live.com name. However, we believe that when we do move to Live Spaces that will be the last time we have to change the URL. This isn’t something we decided to do lightly. We have had to make a ton of tradeoffs from both a technical perspective and the impact to our users.

Thanks for making Spaces your home. We do care what you think and we are listenting.

Hi Greg,

Let me start off by thanking you for the big improvements that were made with the upgrade from MSN Spaces to Live! Spaces. The layout is great, it's finally been adapted for 1024 width.

A question I have though is why you are now filtering out the <IMG start=mouseover dynsrc=xxx> trick that we've been using untill now in order to be able to do Video-Blogging? With the ever-increasing speed of internet-access world-wide, video-blogging is becomming more and more commonplace. However, new Live!Spaces has  not been Enhanced in order to be able to do Video-blogging, instead the only TRICK that worked is now being filtered out!!!

Please could you perhaps explain why it was decided to discontiue support for the HTML mentioned above?

Good entry.  Can't wait for the new release.  Sounds like we will have at least one new theme.  Glad to see Friends is finally making it.  How about customized Backgrounds?  More room in the Sandbox & multiple sandboxes.  A real guest book and guest map.  In depth statistics.  A clock to show local time.  Site search. Oh yes and a spelling and grammar checker would be great along with the ability to edit our own comments.

Live.com--any chance of allowing our page as a public site?  Would almost be like Windows Live Spaces on steroids.

Hello Greg, will the change of the Blog be foreseen in how many months in

Dear Microsoft crew,

As a spanish-speaking MSN Spaces user it's my intention to address this letter to you in order to show my anger and disagreement on the way Spain and latin-american MSN Spaces users are being treated.

Us, spanish-speaking countries' users , feel neglected due to the changes you have decided to introduce to MSN Spaces. That's not only due to the fact that we were not asked to voice our opinions about them but also because of the way they were deployed:

* Lack of accurate information of changing dates. That created confusion on users all over the world.

* Putting aside everyday-issues Spaces bloggers face that are yet to be solved: spanish-speaking users have been complaining long and wide already about issues like impersonating any Spaces comment. This is serious due to the fact that it can be used to insult, harass, damage, etc. any system user (this example is just one of many examples on which solution is simple and straightforward: publish the passport account from which comments are made).

Another example would be the continued URLs changes in Spaces. We assume you know such action's effects on search engines both for rookies and pro bloggers that have decided to use MSN Spaces their communication tool.

* Upgrades and patches introduced are mostly unavailable for spanish-speaking MSN Spaces users. We are talking about Bookmark, Amazon, Social Network modules, etc. Some have been introduced a long time ago and we have yet to be able to test.

* What's more, you continue to show despise and neglect launching new upgrades when our countries have not been able to test or try out previous ones yet.

The brief timespan your work lasts without changes shadows your success as a trustworthy platform. Many bugs should be tested before deployment (photo album bug just to name one). Have you thought about Beta Spaces testers program?

We agree on you introducing useful stuff like Redmond or London weather forecasts. Wouldn't it had been better to allow access to popular on-line services (as YouTube) though? With your update we can not check the weather as easily as a UK user; but at least we would have have videos to watch on Spaces in the meantime.

It's not our intention to harrass you or attack you in any way. We appreciate you reading up to this point (if you got to this point) and would like - and feel we deserve - an explanation about what's going on. This constraints on services offered, dependent on the place you live or language you speak is normally known as discrimination. We understand you may have reasons for all existent issues we are experiencing and we are eager to read them. Just publish them so that we can understand.

As one of the world-wide leading publishing platforms nowadays we suggest you stopping to think what's making you so. If you think the way we do, you'll conclude it's because of all of us: your users.

Will all the links will still work?  What about the links to aggregators, RSS feeds, MSN Alerts, pingers, page translaters?  Will Spaces be making those changes or will each owner?  What will be our new XLM or RSS feed URL?
